How to Wash Your Face (You’re Probably Doing it Wrong!)

Washing your face properly is so important for skin health and getting that clear radiant skin we all want. When done right, it literally clears the way for our skin care products to do the job they’re supposed to do, improves circulation, and makes skin healthier. Everything from double cleansing, to choosing the right cleanser, to face brushes, we’ve taken a hard look at how to wash your face like a pro. It turns out, there’s a lot more to it than you think!

The Double Cleanse

As the name implies, it’s literally cleansing your face twice. It’s really important for your skin’s health to remove all the sunscreen, serums, moisturizer, and, of course, makeup. Plus, it maximizes the benefits of your favorite cleanser.

How to Double Cleanse

Step 1: Start with a gentle oil-based cleanser, like a cleansing balm or oil cleanser, for the first wash. This will take off all of your makeup, sunscreens, serums, moisturizers, excess oil, and everything else that’s oil-based. Oil-based cleansers actually remove oil-based products and won’t cause breakouts. Then rinse.

Bonus: Use a warm washcloth or, even better, a face brush for a primo cleanse (more about this below!)

Step 2: Use a lighter cleanser. With the first oil-based cleanser washing away excess oil and products, your skin is prepped and ready to be nourished with a second cleanse. The lighter cleanser will penetrate deep into pores maximizing the benefits of it. So choose a good one that’s right for your skin type and your skin care needs to get everything you can out of washing your face.

We love antioxidant-packed anti-aging cleansers which are made to seek and destroy cell damaging (and wrinkle-causing) free radicals making skin look more radiant, not to mention healthier. Antioxidants, and other anti-aging ingredients, can actually halt and even reverse signs of aging, like fine lines and wrinkles, loss of elasticity, redness, and dry skin.

Now your skin is clean and ready to absorb your skin care products giving you the full benefit of everything you use.

Types of Cleansers

The type of cleanser you choose just means it’s the delivery system for the ingredients in the product. It’s how it foams, lathers, bubbles, and ultimately cleans your face. Choosing the right cleanser for your skin type won’t dry you out, leave you feeling oily, make you breakout, or set off skin sensitivities. Ultimately, the best cleanser for you will make your skin super happy.

Oil-Based Cleanser (Step 1 of the Double Cleanse)

  • Perfect for all skin types, even oily skin
  • Removes oil-based products, including makeup, sunscreen, oil-based serums, moisturizers, and waterproof makeup
  • Won’t clog your pores, even though it sounds like it might
  • A must have for a proper face wash

Gel Cleanser

  • Perfect for oily or combination skin
  • Removes excess oil
  • Usually has antiseptic and exfoliating benefits
  • Feels like jelly and sometimes is sometimes labelled as ‘jelly cleanser’

Cream Cleanser

  • Perfect for dry, sensitive, and mature skin
  • Very moisturizing and won’t over-dry skin
  • May contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, or SLS, which gives it that creamy, foamy consistency, but this isn’t a natural ingredient and can actually aggravate your skin

Clay Cleanser

  • Perfect for oily and combination skin
  • Clay naturally draws out and absorbs excess oil and impurities
  • Clears up acne and prevents new breakouts

Micellar Cleanser

  • Perfect for dry and sensitive skin
  • “Micelles” are tiny oil beads in water which remove excess oil, dirt, and makeup
  • Apply with cotton balls or cotton pads and leave on (no rinsing required)

Powder Cleanser

  • Perfect for oily, combination, and sensitive skin
  • Powder when dry and creamy when wet making it very gentle
  • You can choose how much water to add, the less water the more exfoliation you get
  • Best results when applied with a muslin cloth, washcloth, or face brush

Bar Cleanser

  • Perfect for oily and combination skin
  • Not typical well-loved by dermatologists because the ingredients that make them a solid can actually clog pores and make skin look dull

Foam Cleanser

  • Perfect for oily and combination skin
  • Like cream cleanser, it may contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, or SLS, which is not a natural ingredient and can aggravate your skin
  • Removes excess oil

Cold Cream and No-rinse Cleansing Cream

  • Perfect for very dry skin, rosacea, eczema, and mature skin
  • Deeply moisturizes
  • Must use a warm washcloth to remove

The Benefits of the Face Brush

Using a face brush to cleanse will give you added benefits versus just your fingertips or even a washcloth. You can choose different brushes for exfoliation, gently cleansing, acne, and more.

If you have a popular face brush like Clairsonic (R.I.P) or Foreo Luna, you get a huge cleansing and exfoliating benefit. They are made to gently massage which improves blood flow and, in turn, makes skin healthier by improving nutrient delivery. They exfoliate dead skin cells, cleanse  products and excess oil, and improve the way your skin absorbs skin care products.

Tip: If you have a Clairsonic and need to order new brushes, you can actually buy replacement brushes from third-party sellers on Amazon. Since the company went out of business this may be your best option to not buying another face brush.

To Sum It Up

Get the max benefit of face washing by doing a Double Cleanse with the right type of cleanser and, if you can, a face brush. At least once a month treat yourself to a luxurious home facial and really pamper your skin. With these tips you’re on your way to healthy radiant skin.
